about

"We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn't want to meet."
-Stephen Hawking

Los Angeles, 1972. A drone descends, sent from a distant space and time to gather information about the universe and to find potential hospitable dwellings for its creator. A shapeshifter, it lands in the dead of night as a tiny, spore-like creature and takes the form of what it perceives to be the dominant lifeform - an expressionless mannequin in a shop window. It proceeds to explore the seedier alleys of the city, collecting genetic information about the species on this planet. Perhaps this was a test of some kind - but was our planet found wanting?

lyrics

Borne upon the wake of a solar wind
A larval spore descends from the heavens
Sleeping metropolis, a meadow of concrete
The darkness conceals the living

Parasitic clone
Devoid of expression, stoic
Alien lifeform
Cosmic collector
Genetic sequences
For its overlord

Mimic
Commencing

Kinetic sensors alight
The darkness reveals its denizens
Its first victim so tiny, yet complex
Fluids and tissues sampled

Parasitic clone
Devoid of expression, stoic
Alien lifeform
Cosmic collector
Genetic sequences
For its overlord

Staggering through the gutter
Seeking a larger prey
The sample drone descends upon
A bright and frantic place

Laid down on a gurney
The precious sample pried from its jaws
Sensing a richer genome
Collection sequence is engaged

Carnage at a level never seen
By the staff in the trauma ward
Unfolds in sterile hallways
The demon exits

Assuming natural form
Riding magnetic waves
Back to the cosmic stream
To deliver the samples

Genome analysis reveals
The dreadful truth of a planet
Welcoming its own extinction
The samples are discarded
